Voyage estimation calculator

Build a rotation port by port. Get the sea distance of every leg, arrival and departure in each port's local time, and what the voyage costs: fuel, port charges, canal tolls, insurance and EU carbon.

One all-in figure: hire, crew and fuel. Split fuel out under detailed costs.

Voyage

Pick where the ship leaves from and where it goes. Distance and days show at once; costs only if you enter them.

Detailed costs: fuel, canal tolls, insurance, EU carbon

Fuel

What the ship burns a day and what you pay a tonne. Leave a fuel blank if the ship does not use it. Fuel adds to the ship cost per day above, so leave fuel out of that figure when you price it here.

Heavy fuel oil (HFO)
Diesel or gas oil (MDO, MGO)
Lubricating oil

Blank fields count as zero. Port charges go in the route table, one amount per call: dues, pilotage, towage and agency together.

Insurance and war risk

One amount for the voyage, for example an additional war-risk premium for the Red Sea.

EU carbon (ETS)

CO2 from heavy fuel (3.114 t per t) and diesel (3.206 t per t). Legs between two EU or EEA ports count in full, legs into or out of the EU or EEA count half, and days at berth in an EU or EEA port count in full.

For planning: shortest safe sea distances, with times in each port's local time. Sea routes: Eurostat SeaRoute (EUPL-1.2). Coastline: Natural Earth.

How the voyage is worked out

Each leg's sea distance comes from the sea distance calculator. Days at sea are the distance divided by 24 times the speed. The first port departs at the date you enter, in that port's local time; every arrival adds the days at sea, and every departure adds the days in port. Each time shows in the local time of the port it happens in, with its offset from UTC, so a rotation that crosses time zones reads the way a schedule does.

Cost at sea is the days at sea times the fuel burned per day at sea at its price, for heavy fuel, diesel oil and lubricant, plus the fixed daily cost; cost in port works the same way with the in-port consumption. On top come the port charges you enter per call, a toll for each Suez or Panama transit the route makes, one insurance and war-risk amount for the voyage, and the EU carbon cost worked out from the fuel burned on EU legs.
