What makes a port a RoRo port on this map?

A vehicle or deep-sea RoRo port has a terminal whose own operator or port authority states that it handles roll-on/roll-off cargo such as new vehicles, machinery and trailers, loaded over the ship's ramp. Each one on the map links to that source. Ferry RoRo ports, which serve short-sea routes for trucks, trailers and passenger vehicles, are a separate layer you can switch on.

What is a UN/LOCODE and where is it used?

A UN/LOCODE is a five-character location code maintained by the UN Economic Commission for Europe: two letters for the country and three for the place, so Bremerhaven is DE BRV. It is the code carriers, forwarders and customs systems use in bookings, bills of lading and EDI messages, so matching it exactly avoids a shipment being routed to the wrong port.

Why do channel depth and maximum draft matter for a car carrier call?

A vessel can only use a port where the approach channel and the berth are deeper than its loaded draft, and a port's maximum vessel length and beam limit which ships can berth at all. The figures here come from the World Port Index and are meant for commercial planning, not navigation; always confirm with the port or its pilots before fixing a call.

How is the nearest-port distance worked out?

It is the straight-line great-circle distance between the two ports' coordinates, in nautical miles. A real sailing route is longer, sometimes much longer where a coastline, strait or canal is in the way, so use it to compare alternatives, not to estimate transit time.

How current is the data, and how do I report a correction?

Each port lists its sources and the date they were checked, and the whole dataset shows its build date. Terminals change operators and ports change depths, so if something is out of date, use the correction link on the port page and we will check it against the source.
